Midland County Habitat for Humanity Received $22,000 Grant from Lowe’s for Critical Home Repairs

Midland County Habitat for Humanity (MCHFH) completed 15 Critical Home Repairs with the funds donated by Lowe’s. MCHFH received a $22,000 grant from Lowe’s to help fund the Rock the Block home repair program. Rock the Block is designed to address the exterior areas of properties including yard maintenance, lighting improvements, and repair of porches, railings, windows, and critical home repairs.
With funding from Lowe’s and other community supporters, MCHFH was able to complete 15 Critical Home Repair projects for homeowners in the Bay City Road corridor, in July and August of 2022. Projects included replacing roofs, upgrading windows, assisting several seniors needing aging in place repairs and other critical home repairs. The funding is part of Lowe’s partnership renewal with Habitat for Humanity International which includes a donation of $2.5 million to support 100 local Habitat organizations undertaking home repair and rehab projects across the U.S.
“Studies show that across the U.S., access to quality, affordable home repair continues to be out of reach for many low to moderate income households. This funding allows us to aid many homeowners living on a small, fixed income to address home repairs” said Jennifer Chappel, President/CEO of Midland County Habitat for Humanity. “Often times home owners are overwhelmed with the thought of hiring a contractor, do not have the knowledge to fix the needed repairs on their own, or simply cannot afford the repair. The needed repairs are often delayed which makes the problem grow, causing larger issues; increasing the homeowner’s utility bills, and causing unnecessary stress. MCHFH secures grants and private donations to fund repairs and also offers no interest loans to help low to moderate income families repair their homes. We firmly believe everyone has the right to safe, decent, affordable housing.”
With the Rock the Block program, MCHFH engaged local volunteers to complete many of the projects. Over 150 volunteers worked more than 500 volunteer hours to complete the 15 critical home repairs.
Habitat’s decades of work illustrate that individuals and families thrive when they have a safe and stable home in a safe and stable community. MCHFH realized that providing decent, safe, and affordable housing means more than building new houses. It also means maintaining Midland County’s housing stock by rehabilitating and repairing existing houses. This knowledge inspired MCHFH’s Home Repair program, and the Rock the Block effort, which helps current home owners that have low to moderate income, make critical repairs to their current homes.
Lowe’s and Habitat began their partnership in 2003. Since then, Lowe’s has supported many of the global housing nonprofit’s efforts, including the Women Build Program and Habitat’s Neighborhood Revitalization program. Lowe’s has also supported Habitat’s Cost of Home national advocacy campaign and sponsored local Habitat builds and employee volunteer days, in addition to providing affiliate grants and donated products. Lowe’s commitment through 2022 will bring the company’s total contributions to Habitat to more than $84 million.
