Bill has always been active in the community.  He received the Innovation of the Year Award from Henry Ford Community College for his role in their launch of partnership with HFHS in creating a health care oriented Early College, one of the first in the State (2007).  He has provided Board leadership and volunteered with the Greening of Detroit, planting over 1000 trees each year, to reforest the City of Detroit.

Bill served on the Board of Habitat for Humanity Detroit, including chairing their Board.  He has been part of new build and/or rehabilitation of more than 50 homes in Detroit, Oakland County, in Appalachia, and in New Orleans following hurricane Katrina.

Bill and his wife retired to Midland to be closer to their family and grandchildren.  He volunteers at Dow Gardens and with the Memorial Presbyterian Church community garden.
