Making Progress on Humanity Street Neighborhood Development: May Construction Update
We’re continuing to make steady progress on the Humanity Street Neighborhood development, with major infrastructure and right-of-way milestones completed over the past month.
Continued infrastructure improvements
All sanitary sewer and water mains for the site are now installed, along with most of the service connections for the future Alden B. Dow Habitat homes. This work also included the addition of a new future fire hydrant for the neighborhood.
These improvements will increase the overall capacity of the wastewater system and the water pressure in the surrounding area, while ensuring that future residents have access to safe, clean, and reliable plumbing.
We also completed additional improvements to the storm sewer, including installing new manholes and catch basins. These systems are designed to integrate with existing infrastructure and prevent runoff from impacting surrounding properties, helping improve resilience and support the long-term success of the development.

New street connections
Over the past month, we installed sand subbase on the extension of Grant Lane, along with an aggregate base that will allow traffic to move through the neighborhood in new ways once the project is complete.
Similar work has been completed on the new Humanity Street, where the sand subbase is now at grade. This helps further illustrate how the new street will take shape and how the extension of Grant Lane will eventually connect to Dauer Street.
The improvements to the Grant Lane also allow residents on Dauer St. to enter and exit the neighborhood while work continues in the right‑of‑way.

Looking ahead
Heading into June, we plan to complete the remaining work affecting traffic on Dauer St., including the final sanitary sewer and water service connections, as well as storm sewer installation across the site. We also plan to connect Humanity St. to Shreeve St.
Some of this work will result in intermittent lane closures on Shreeve St. as well as Dauer St. We appreciate the neighborhoods continued patience and understanding while we complete this work as quickly as possible.
Coordination and partnerships
This project is part of the Humanity Stree Development, a multi-year effort to expand access to affordable housing in Midland County, in partnership with Pat’s Gradall, OHM, and Midland Public Schools.
The work continues in close coordination with the City to minimize disruption and align improvements across the area.
