When Monica talks about her home today, the first thing she says is simple:

“It’s mine. I feel safe. I feel secure.”

Before homeownership

That hasn’t always been her experience. Before partnering with Habitat, Monica spent decades in a mobile home before moving to a small senior apartment (just 400 square feet). She worked overnight shifts, and daytime construction made it difficult to rest. Even basic routines were a challenge. Laundry meant navigating stairs and strict hours. Safety was a constant concern, and getting to her car at night meant walking through a dark parking lot alone.

Like many in our community, she was working hard to find something more stable, something she could truly call her own. That opportunity came through a simple conversation.

A path forward

A supervisor encouraged her to apply for a Habitat home. She picked up an application at the ReStore, began gathering paperwork, and took each step one at a time. With every form submitted, she felt closer to something she wasn’t sure was possible.

When she was selected, she describes it as “over the moon.”

“I felt so blessed,” she said. “I knew what a Habitat home stood for.”

What home makes possible

Today, Monica’s experience is entirely different. Her home offers safety in ways that are both big and small. She can park in her garage and go straight inside after a midnight shift. Her laundry is just steps away, available whenever she needs it. She no longer worries about unsafe conditions, winter weather, or maintenance issues beyond her control.

“I don’t have to worry anymore,” she said. “That’s a big thing.”

Her home also gives her something deeper, peace of mind. With a stable, affordable mortgage, Monica knows what her monthly payment will be. There are no unexpected rent increases, no uncertainty about lease renewals. That predictability allows her to plan, to feel grounded, and to move forward with confidence. And for Monica, this journey is also personal.

“As a single woman, this is a big deal,” she said. “I proved to myself that I could do it.”
