Midland County Habitat for Humanity and Home To Stay Partner for the 5th Year To Help Home Owners with Roof Repairs
Midland County Habitat for Humanity (MCHFH) and Home To Stay collaborate for a 5th year, on addressing the increasing need for roof repairs and or replacement in the City of Midland. Both agencies are excited to be collaborating again to fulfil this need in the community. Equally, the agencies state the need they continue to see most frequently is roofing. “We feel that many times we see instances where the roof of a home needs to be addressed before any other areas of repairs,” said Donna St. John, Executive Director of Home To Stay. “In many cases, it does not make sense to invest in other home repairs if the roof is in need of repair or replacement.”
The agencies collaborated on a joint funding request with the City of Midland for a Community Development Block Grant which will fund the projects. “We have secured funding through the City’s Community Development Block Grant to enable us to continue the roofing initiative in the City of Midland,” stated Jennifer Chappel, President and CEO of Midland County Habitat for Humanity.
The Community Development Block Grant is one of the longest-running programs of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This funding will bring Federal dollars into the city for this program. “Community based agencies are encouraged to collaborate through the City’s CDBG program. The roofing initiative between Home To Stay and Midland County Habitat for Humanity is a strong example of joint cooperation and leveraging of resources to better meet the repair needs of low to moderate income homeowners within the city” said Chappel. It is important to note, that because this is a grant from the City of Midland, only homeowners living within the city limits of Midland and meet the income guidelines are eligible for consideration. “Our goal is to serve seven to ten homes through roof repair and or replacement,” Chappel said. “We know the need is much greater than ten but we need to keep the momentum going repairing or replacing one roof at a time. We hope to obtain additional funding in the future to continue this much needed initiative,” said St. John.
